Hy-Vee and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) announced it has partnered with a Kansas City artist for a specially commissioned art piece honoring baseball legend and soon-to-be 2022 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil Jr.
To celebrate Buck O’Neil’s upcoming induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Hy-Vee and the NLBM commissioned renowned Kansas City artist Phil Shafer to create a unique art piece that pays tribute to one of baseball’s most influential African American players.
A replica of Shafer’s artwork along with Buck O’Neil merchandise will be exhibited at an area Hy-Vee store each week leading up to the induction ceremony. Hy-Vee customers will be able to view the replica, as well as have their photo taken alongside an 8-by-10-foot backdrop of Buck O’Neil. The art tour will also include special experiences, giveaways, appearances by the artist or the NLBM and more.
A full schedule of the art tour is available at http://hyv.ee/buck.
All Kansas City area Hy-Vee stores will offer limited-edition Buck O’Neil merchandise such as t-shirts, posters, tote bags, etc. starting Mar. 22, and possibly NLBM items. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the NLBM.
Shafer’s original 24-by-36-inch art piece will be available for online auction at http://hyv.ee/buck during the campaign period. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to NLBM.
