The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. Since its inception in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a global series of more than 140 Races with more than 1 million people expected to participate in 2014.

PSA/Statistics/Facts (Breast cancer in general):
– One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
– Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women age 40-50 years in the U.S.
– Breast cancer is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women in the U.S.
– An estimated 200,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the U.S. during 2014.
– An estimated 2,000 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in the U.S. in 2014.
– A case of breast cancer is diagnosed among women every two (2) minutes, and a woman dies of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the U.S.
PSA/Statistics/Facts (Komen KC specific):
– Susan G. Komen Greater Kansas City has granted nearly $700,000 this year to local area nonprofits focusing on breast health issues. The majority of these funds were generated at the 2013 Komen Kansas City Race for the Cure.
– 75% of the net proceeds from the annual Race for the Cure stay in the Greater Kansas City service area in the form of grants to local nonprofits focusing on breast health. The remaining 25% of net proceeds are used for cutting-edge research through the Susan. G. Komen Research and Grants program.
– Susan G. Komen Greater Kansas City Affiliate has granted more than $10 million to the communities they serve over the past 20 years. The majority of these funds have been generated at the annual Race for the Cure.
– Nearly 28,000 breast health services will be provided to the Greater Kansas City service area because of grants provided by Komen Kansas City. The majority of these funds are generated at the annual Race for the Cure.
– Thanks to your support at the annual Race for the Cure, Komen Kansas City grantees will provide nearly 2,500 no cost clinical breast exams and mammograms to patients who cannot afford treatment on their own this year.
– Komen Kansas City grantees will provide more than 10,000 support services to clients who cannot afford patient navigation, psychosocial support, assistance with their physical needs as well as transportation to/from appointments because of the funds generated from the 2012 Race for the Cure®.
